Some say that nothing really changes under the sun, and it is really ironic that some of the things women did in the past, such as crafts, to help the family along are often the secret to a new stream of income for the family.
- Write: Anyone who has taken a course in writing will remember the axiom that you should write about what you know about. I don’t think anyone knows more about life and its problems than moms. Every day, more and more sites hire writers to create internet content (what you and I read everyday on the internet). A simple search will reveal them. Another great solution for would be writers is to be a local reporter. As long as you have a partner to watch the kids, you can sneak out after dinner and attend town meetings or local events and write about them for local publications. Fun and notoriety, since your neighbors get to see your byline.
- Crafts: You are sitting around all evening anyway, supervising homework or watching T.V with the kids; why not put the time to use? I know a lady who put her kids through college with her quilted wreaths. Her autumn ones were especially in demand, and word of mouth advertising meant that she didn’t have to either advertise or go to crafts fairs.
- Jewelry: Today’s crafted jewelry is so beautiful, that you wonder why anyone would want to buy manufactured jewelry? Beautiful turquoise and stone pieces that cost a fortune in a store can be offered by home crafters at a fraction of the cost. The downside is that you normally have to sit at craft fairs on the weekends, although some successful jewelers hold their own in home shows a few times a year, with less cost and trouble
- Online advertising: A bit more complex, because it involves setting up a site and having the right keywords to attract people to it, but Google and Bing and Yahoo pay their site developers to carry ads on their sites and get paid for them! You can make a nice little monthly check if you do it right.
- Market your expertise: What did you do before you stayed at home to take care of those little bundles of joy? Were you an accountant? Many small companies will hire someone to take home their bills to pay or bank statements to reconcile on a monthly basis. (And with remote computer access today, you may not even have to physically pick up the work.) Did you do computer programming? There is no end to the companies that need freelance programmers. In these uncertain times, they are very happy to hire “consultants” project by project rather than take on the burden of a new salaried employee.
There are many other options, but these are some that have proven to be the easiest, cheapest to enter and most cost effective over time, involving the least start up costs. SAHMs and WAHMs are no longer just doing the laundry.
